Imphal, Nov 18: A mob vandalised the ancestral house of BJP MLA Kongkham Robindro in Imphal West district on Sunday evening, escalating the ongoing unrest in Manipur. This incident follows an attack on the MLA’s personal residence a day earlier, which was ransacked and partially burned.

According to police, the mob stormed Robindro’s ancestral home in Mayang Imphal, demanding to meet with the legislator to discuss his position on the current ethnic and political tensions in the state. As Robindro was not at home, his father assured the group that any messages would be relayed to the MLA. The protesters sought clarity on Robindro’s views on the ongoing violence.

The attacks come amid violent protests in the Imphal Valley, sparked by the recent killings of six people, including three women and children, by militants in the hill district of Jiribam. On Saturday, protests turned violent, leading to the ransacking of properties belonging to several state ministers and MLAs. Authorities imposed an indefinite curfew to restore order.

Since May 2023, ethnic violence between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki tribals in the hills has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands of displaced persons. The situation remains tense as efforts to quell the violence continue.
