The Central government has approved Rs 200 crore for the development of two iconic tourist destinations in Assam—Rang Ghar and the Assam State Zoo. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the approval on Friday, expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the special assistance under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment.

In a post on social media, CM Sarma wrote, “Heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister @narendramodi ji for approving close to Rs 200 cr to develop Assam’s two iconic tourist sites—Rang Ghar and State Zoo under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment.”

Rang Ghar, a historic amphitheater located in Sivasagar, and the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati are significant landmarks that attract both domestic and international visitors. The funding will be used to upgrade infrastructure and enhance tourism in these important locations.

The announcement comes as part of Assam’s ongoing efforts to boost its tourism industry. Recently, the state hosted the 12th edition of the International Tourism Mart (ITM) in Kaziranga, attended by Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, CM Sarma, and Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu. CM Sarma emphasized the event’s importance in promoting the cultural and historical heritage of Northeast India.

In addition, CM Sarma celebrated the recent recognition of Charaideo Maidam as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting its historical significance during the Ahom dynasty.
