Guwahati, Nov 30: The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has launched an initiative to repurpose its non-operational buses for various business ventures, including food trucks, pharmacies, and private offices. The program, named “Rhino Food Xpress,” is aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, creating new income opportunities, and generating additional revenue for ASTC.
Under this initiative, entrepreneurs can lease these non-functional buses for a five-year period and pay a monthly rental fee to ASTC. Approximately 60 buses, which are no longer commercially viable, will be available for transformation across different districts in Assam. The buses will feature the iconic Rhino logo, symbolizing strength and resilience.
ASTC Managing Director Chinmoy Prakash Phookan highlighted that the program will support local businesses and contribute to economic development in the state. The initiative has been supported by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Transport Minister Kesab Mahanta.
Juritora Saikia, the first entrepreneur to benefit from the program, was recognized during the launch event. Saikia plans to operate a food business using one of the repurposed buses, setting an example for future participants.
The program reflects ASTC’s commitment to sustainable growth and efforts to enhance Assam’s public transport services while boosting local economies.
