The Manipur government on Sunday announced a two-day extension of the suspension of internet services in nine districts of the state until 5:15 PM on December 3.
According to an order issued by the Home Department, the suspension remains in effect in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam.
The order stated that the decision was taken after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation and its connection to internet services. Mobile internet, mobile data, VSATs, and VPN services will remain suspended in the designated areas “in public interest.”
Internet services in Manipur were initially suspended on November 16 following violent incidents triggered by the recovery of the bodies of three women and three children in the Jiri and Barak rivers in Manipur and Assam.
However, the government conditionally lifted restrictions on broadband services (ILL and FTTH) on November 19 to ease difficulties faced by the public, healthcare providers, educational institutions, and other offices. Subscribers were required to ensure connections were limited to approved services, with hotspots and Wi-Fi sharing strictly prohibited.
