Imphal, Dec 9: The Assam Rifles and Manipur Police have successfully destroyed significant illegal poppy farming areas in Chandel and Ukhrul districts, officials reported on Sunday.

The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with local villagers, cleared approximately two square kilometers of poppy fields in the Saibol Joupi, TM Dingpi, and T Bollon areas of Chandel district. This operation is part of a larger initiative to combat illegal drug cultivation and promote community well-being. Extensive awareness programs conducted by the Assam Rifles educated local residents about the harmful effects of poppy farming, leading to increased participation from villagers in the operation.

In a separate operation, the Manipur Police destroyed 30 acres of poppy crops in the Khamason range of Ukhrul district and arrested four individuals involved in the illegal farming. Chief Minister N. Biren Singh praised the police for their dedication to the “War on Drugs” campaign and emphasized the state’s commitment to tackling the growing drug problem.

A report by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) revealed that law enforcement agencies have destroyed over 19,000 acres of illegal poppy cultivation across 12 districts from 2017 to 2024. The report also highlighted the environmental damage caused by poppy farming, including deforestation and soil erosion.

The state government has linked the increase in illegal poppy farming to illegal immigrants from Myanmar who have settled in the region. The Manipur government continues to focus on eradicating illicit poppy cultivation and restoring peace and stability in the region.
