The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday submitted a memorandum to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, protesting the breach of Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala, India. The incident, which occurred last week, saw a group of protesters vandalizing the consulate following the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. India has since expressed regret, calling the breach “deeply regrettable.”
The protest march, organized by BNP’s student, youth, and voluntary wings, started from the party’s Naya Paltan office and was headed toward the Indian High Commission in Baridhara. However, the march was stopped by police in Rampura, several miles from its destination. A six-member delegation, including top BNP leaders, was allowed to proceed and deliver the memorandum.
The delegation, which included Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna and Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib, condemned the attack on the consulate and the desecration of the national flag. Munna emphasized the BNP’s commitment to peace while voicing strong disapproval of the incident.
Prior to the march, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi addressed the protesters, who chanted slogans calling for a boycott of Indian goods and the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Security was increased around Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave ahead of the demonstration.
