Guwahati, Dec 10: Citizens from Assam’s Barak Valley, including over 100 people from Cachar district, have written a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, urging them to condemn Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus for his alleged role in the persecution of minorities in Bangladesh. The memorandum, submitted to the Cachar district commissioner on Monday, accuses Yunus of being complicit in violence against Hindus and other minority communities under the interim Bangladeshi government.
The letter claims that Yunus’ involvement with the government has coincided with a significant rise in violence against the Hindu community, which the signatories argue is part of a larger, institutionalized campaign of persecution. They also referenced accusations from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has accused Yunus of orchestrating these violent attacks.
The citizens argue that Yunus’ actions undermine the core principles of the Nobel Peace Prize, which stands for peace, justice, and human dignity. They suggest that Yunus, once hailed as a social reformer, is now associated with the oppression of vulnerable communities in Bangladesh.
While acknowledging that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be revoked, the memorandum calls for immediate action from the Nobel Committee. The signatories urge the committee to issue a statement condemning the ongoing violence and reminding Yunus of his moral obligations as a laureate. They also propose a review of the Nobel selection process to ensure future recipients uphold the values of peace, justice, and human dignity.
