Romen Chandra Borthakur has been appointed as the new president of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in Assam. The announcement was made by the party on Monday via a post on ‘X’, extending best wishes for his leadership under the guidance of AITC Chairperson Mamata Banerjee.
Borthakur, a former Congress spokesperson and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, joined the Trinamool Congress on December 7 in the presence of AITC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev. Borthakur had contested the 2021 Assam Assembly elections from Jalukbari but was defeated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He later joined AAP but resigned from the party before taking up his new role with TMC.
The formal leadership handover was conducted by veteran TMC leader Moloy Ghatak, who had been overseeing the party’s activities in Assam since October. Ghatak, who also serves as the West Bengal labour and law minister, expressed confidence in Borthakur’s ability to strengthen the party’s presence in Assam.
