Agartala, December 10, 2024: Former Chief Minister and CPM Politburo member Manik Sarkar has accused the BJP government of misleading the people and making false promises, leading to an unusual economic crisis in Tripura. Speaking at the CPIM Belonia Sub-division Conference today, Sarkar called for a change of government to stabilize the situation.
“The situation in Tripura is gradually getting worse. Prices of goods, illegal wage labor, and black marketing are on the rise. There is a shortage of work and food in villages,” Sarkar stated. He contrasted the current state with the tenure of the Left Front government, during which he claimed there was no shortage of work in every house.
Sarkar emphasized that the Left Front government provided work opportunities through about 20 state departments, which prevented starvation and even attracted people from outside the state to Tripura. “But currently, during the BJP government’s tenure, there is no work in the MGNREGA and TUEP. People are lost in search of work. Currently, people are selling their children due to hunger, and the state government is not admitting it,” he alleged.
He also criticized the state’s education system, highlighting a severe shortage of teachers in schools. “Students are taking to the streets to protest for the demands of every teacher. Many schools are closing due to lack of teachers, but the state government is not budging,” Sarkar said. He added that there is also a shortage of doctors and health workers in hospitals.
Sarkar pointed out a 23 percent difference in dearness allowance between central employees and Tripura employees, attributing it to the weaknesses and shortcomings of the BJP coalition government. “During the Left regime, dearness allowance was given to Tripura government employees twice a year to bring it at par with the central government. But that has stopped now,” he noted.
He accused the BJP government of financially depriving government employees and reiterated his call for the people of Tripura to unite against the current administration. “The BJP government is a deceitful government. It came to power by making false promises and misleading the people. The people of the state must fight against this together,” Sarkar concluded.
The conference highlighted the growing discontent among the people of Tripura and the urgent need for addressing the economic and social challenges faced by the state.
