Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emphasized that the state must draw lessons from Israel on how to survive and thrive even when surrounded by adversaries. Speaking at the ‘Swahid Diwas’ event in Jamugurihat, Sonitpur district, Sarma highlighted the historical vulnerabilities of Assam’s borders and stressed the importance of resilience, technology, and courage in safeguarding the state’s future.

Sarma pointed out that Assam shares borders with Bangladesh, Myanmar, and West Bengal, and that Assamese people are a minority in 12 districts. He urged the people of Assam to adopt strategies from Israel, which has managed to overcome numerous challenges and threats to its existence.

Addressing the continuing demographic and political challenges in the state, Sarma acknowledged that the threat from outsiders remains, even years after the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985. He criticized the Congress party for its role in weakening the rights of indigenous people, particularly in regard to land ownership, and called for a renewed focus on self-reliance and economic empowerment.

The Chief Minister also emphasized the importance of reclaiming land from encroachers, with over 10,000 hectares recovered in the past three years. He announced that the government is working on initiatives to preserve Assam’s cultural identity, including the establishment of medical colleges and universities in every district.

Sarma concluded by urging the youth to take responsibility for the state’s economic growth and future, stressing that it is through hard work and determination that Assam can protect its heritage and secure its place in the future.
