Guwahati, Dec 12: Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah announced that the party will hold a three-day review meeting from December 13 to 15 in Guwahati to assess its defeat in the recent by-elections. The meeting will include party leaders from the district and block levels, who will present reports to identify the reasons behind the party’s loss in five constituencies.

Borah stated that the review process would provide clarity on the factors contributing to the poor performance. He also mentioned that the party is gearing up for the upcoming Panchayat elections and plans to field candidates with a strong public image.

Regarding opposition unity, Borah emphasized that Congress supports collaboration with other opposition parties to challenge the BJP. However, he suggested that talks on alliances could take place after the Panchayat elections.

Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, commenting on the possibility of an alliance, stressed the importance of a clear seat-sharing agreement with Congress before any partnership is formed. He warned that if Congress contests the next Assembly elections alone, it could face a significant decline in seats, predicting a drop from 26 seats in 2021 to just six in the upcoming election.
