Aizawl, Dec 12: In a significant move to tackle the growing drug problem, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated two new excise and narcotics stations at Saitual and Khawzawl on Wednesday. These stations are strategically located in the eastern part of the state, which has been identified as a key area for strengthening anti-drug efforts.

The establishment of these new stations is part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to reduce the supply of narcotics, particularly those smuggled from neighboring Myanmar. A senior official stated that this initiative reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the drug menace and providing solutions for drug-affected youth.

Since assuming office on December 8 last year, Chief Minister Lalduhoma has made the fight against drugs a top priority. On his first day in office, he visited a de-addiction center to emphasize his personal commitment to the cause. The state government has since collaborated with NGOs, churches, and relevant departments to devise a robust plan to tackle both the demand and supply of illicit drugs.

In addition to the new stations, the government is working on amendments to existing laws to improve law enforcement. Another excise and narcotics station will also be inaugurated at Hnahthial on Thursday by Excise & Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar.

The government’s efforts come amid a series of significant drug seizures. Between November 20 and December 10, Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam collectively seized narcotics worth approximately Rs 200 crore, including heroin and methamphetamine tablets, all smuggled from Myanmar.

With these measures, the government aims to strengthen its fight against drug trafficking and protect the youth of Mizoram from the growing drug threat.
