Imphal, Dec 13: A Delhi-based Meitei organization has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban all Kuki militant groups in Manipur and end the “Suspension of Operations” (SoO) agreement. The Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC) submitted a memorandum to Modi, accusing the government of appeasing Kuki militants and urging measures to protect the territorial and cultural integrity of Manipur, which has been rocked by ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities.
The SoO pact, signed in 2008 between the central government, the Manipur government, and two Kuki militant groups—the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF)—has been periodically extended. The DMCC criticized the pact, claiming it supports Kuki militants and their divisive politics.
The organization also called for a ban on all Kuki militant outfits and sought accountability for the recent killings of three women and three children in Jiribam district. Additionally, the DMCC demanded the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state, stating that the government has a duty to protect Manipur’s people from external threats. Ethnic violence has claimed over 250 lives in the region since May last year.
