Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accompanied by his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, arrived in Thimphu on Monday for a three-day official visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between Assam and Bhutan. This marks the first-ever visit by an Assam Chief Minister to the Himalayan kingdom.
CM Sarma expressed his appreciation for the warm reception upon arrival, thanking Bhutan’s Foreign Minister, Lyonpo D. N. Dhungyel, for his hospitality. On social media, Dr. Sarma said, “I look forward to boosting Bharat’s ties with this beautiful nation during my three-day visit.” In a separate post in Dzongkha, Bhutan’s official language, he highlighted that his visit was at the invitation of Bhutan’s King, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, to attend the country’s National Day celebrations.
During his visit, CM Sarma is set to meet with Bhutan’s King, Queen, and Prime Minister to discuss expanding cooperation in political, economic, and cultural spheres. The visit coincides with Bhutan’s National Day, where Sarma will attend as a special guest.
This visit is seen as a significant milestone in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between Assam and Bhutan, with a focus on trade, regional security, and mutual collaboration. It also underscores Assam’s growing role in India’s foreign policy in the Northeast.
