Agartala, December 17, 2024: In a bid to bring down electricity bills to zero and harness the immense potential of solar energy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana is revolutionizing energy generation in India. State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the project’s transformative potential, calling it a “game-changer for every household.”
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gifted the nation an extraordinary initiative to light up every home and free families from the burden of hefty electricity bills,” said Nath during a press briefing. He elaborated on how the project taps into the limitless power of the sun, transcending faith-based practices to deliver tangible benefits through solar energy.
The PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana, launched on February 13, 2024, aims to generate 500 gigawatts of solar power by 2030, with 200 gigawatts already achieved. The initiative targets rooftop solar installations, empowering families to produce their own electricity and contribute to a sustainable future. “This is where Modiji’s vision and charisma shine,” Nath remarked.
To incentivize participation, the central government has allocated a budget of Rs 75,021 crore for the scheme, running from 2023-24 to 2026-27. Special subsidies are provided for residential households: Rs 33,000 per kilowatt for the first 2 kW of rooftop solar panels; Rs 19,800 per kW for the next 1 kW, with a maximum subsidy of ₹85,800 for 3 kW installations; and for housing societies and electric vehicle charging setups, subsidies of ₹19,800 per kW are available for systems up to 500 kW.
In Tripura, 10,062 solar applications have been registered on the MNRE portal, with 1,056 submitted and 48 installations completed so far. A total of 58 beneficiaries have already received subsidies, Nath revealed.
Families can install up to 3 kW of solar panels, and surplus electricity can be sold back to Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), creating a win-win scenario. “Our officials are committed to assisting every interested household in making this project a success,” Nath assured.
The Power Minister emphasized the broader goal of increasing the share of solar energy in India’s power grid. “This project is not just about saving money; it’s about empowering citizens to contribute to a cleaner, greener future,” he said. Calling for collective action, Nath concluded, “Let’s all do Surya Vandana together and embrace the power of the sun.”
With its ambitious targets and clear benefits, the PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana promises to be a cornerstone of India’s renewable energy future, paving the way for sustainable development and economic savings for millions of households.
