In a major conservation effort, India has successfully tagged its first Ganges River Dolphin in Assam. The Union Ministry of Environment announced this landmark achievement on Wednesday.

The tagging was carried out by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in collaboration with the Assam Forest Department and Aaranyak. A healthy male dolphin was tagged and released back into the river under veterinary care. The tagging aims to gather crucial data on the dolphin’s migratory patterns, seasonal movements, and habitat use.

This initiative will provide valuable insights into the dolphin’s behavior and distribution, helping to inform future conservation strategies, particularly in the fragmented ecosystems of the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna River system.
