Agartala, December 21, 2024: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in the functioning of the police force in the northeast, stating that with insurgency largely quelled in the region, the focus should now be on delivering speedy justice to the people.
Addressing the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), Shah credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for bringing peace to the region through the signing of 20 peace accords over the past decade, resulting in the surrender of 9,000 armed militants.
“For four decades, the police force in the northeast has been combating insurgency. Now that the region is moving towards peace, it is crucial to change the approach and ensure justice is delivered within three years of filing an FIR,” Shah said.
Highlighting the government’s development initiatives, Shah revealed that the Centre has allocated ₹81,000 crore for rail connectivity and ₹41,000 crore for road infrastructure in the northeast.
The Home minister also highlighted the Centre’s push for organic farming in the region. “The government has established the National Organic Corporation Ltd (NOCL) to support organic agriculture. I urge all Chief Ministers of the northeastern states to collaborate with NOCL for packaging, marketing, and exporting organic products,” he added.
The session was attended by Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, MoS Dr. Sukanta Majumder, Chief Ministers of seven northeastern states, and Meghalaya’s Power Minister.
