Agartala, December 23, 2024: Tripura’s ex-Minister and incumbent Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman on Sunday lashed out at Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his controversial remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution. The Congress has announced a series of nationwide protests, including a long march in every district on December 24, to condemn Shah’s statements, which they claim reflect a divisive and anti-democratic mentality.
In a press conference held at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan in Agartala city on Sunday, Barman said, “The ugly comments made by the Union Home Minister about Dr. Ambedkar have shocked the entire country. These remarks not only insult the father of the Constitution but also reveal the BJP’s divisive mindset. The Home Minister’s words show their intent to erode the rights of Scheduled Castes and weaken the shield of protection provided to them by the Constitution.”
He added that despite widespread outrage, the ruling party has neither withdrawn the comments nor expressed regret. Instead, Barman alleged, the BJP is attempting to divert attention by falsely accusing Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of pushing a BJP MP. “This is a desperate attempt to shift the narrative, but Congress wants to make it clear that such tactics will not succeed. The country will not forget or forgive these divisive comments,” he said.
Barman further accused the BJP of engaging in caste-based politics to weaken India’s democracy. “By making such remarks, Amit Shah has shown that he does not believe in democracy. The BJP is trying to divide the country, but Congress stands firm in its demand for a caste census. We want to understand how central schemes have benefitted the backward classes and assess their current socio-economic condition,” he stated.
Calling on all democratic forces to unite, Barman urged intensified protests until the Prime Minister dismisses Amit Shah and the Home Minister offers an unconditional apology. “The fight for justice and democracy will continue,” he declared.
As part of their protest, the Congress will organize marches on December 24 to honor Dr. Ambedkar. “We will march in every district and garland Ambedkar’s statues. This program will involve all democratic organizations and citizens who wish to condemn these remarks,” Barman announced.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that preparations for the December 24 movement are already underway.
