Agartala, December 23, 2024: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Jagat Prakash Nadda responded to a letter from Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) Kriti Devi Debbarman regarding the establishment of an AIIMS-like medical college hospital in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region of the Tripura East Lok Sabha constituency.
In his response, Nadda clarified that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has already been established in Guwahati, Assam, to strengthen healthcare facilities in the North-Eastern region. He stated, “In the current phase of PMSSY, there is no proposal for the establishment of AIIMS in Tripura.”
Highlighting efforts to improve healthcare in Tripura, the minister mentioned that the Agartala Medical College has already been upgraded under PMSSY. “Approval was accorded for the construction of a Super Speciality Block at the Agartala Medical College on a Centre-State sharing basis, and the work has been completed,” he said.
Nadda also emphasized the role of the National Health Mission (NHM) in supporting state healthcare infrastructure. “The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare provides financial and technical support to States/UTs under NHM based on their Programme Implementation Plans (PIPs) within the overall resource envelope,” he explained.
He added that the ministry would support proposals for strengthening healthcare in Tripura East, provided they align with the NHM framework and the state’s resource envelope.
