Kisen Wanniang, a 15-year-old from Mawlangwir in the South West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, was honored with the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar for his bravery in rescuing four children from the Maweitksar River. The award was presented by the President of India, Smti. Draupadi Murmu, at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on December 26.
Kisen was washing clothes by the river when he heard the cries of children aged 9 to 12, who were caught in the strong current. Without hesitation, he jumped into the river, risking his own life to save each of them. Kisen, the son of a single mother working as a domestic helper, displayed immense courage and selflessness during the rescue.
This year, the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar was awarded to 17 children across seven categories for their exceptional achievements. Kisen’s heroic act stood out as one of the most inspiring moments of the ceremony.
