The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) celebrated its 23rd Foundation Day today at the JN Manipur Dance Academy, focusing on the theme “The Impact of Present Crises on Education in Manipur.” Founded on January 3, 2002, the organization used the occasion to spotlight the challenges facing the state’s education sector.
Retired Professor W. Nabakumar Singh of Manipur University’s Department of Anthropology was the Chief Guest of the event. Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei, DESAM President, presided over the ceremony, and P. Nipendro Singh, Principal of Model Higher Secondary School and recipient of the State Award for Teachers 2024, served as the Guest of Honour.
The program included speeches, cultural performances, and the release of the fourth volume of “Lamjing Meira,” DESAM’s monthly journal. Additionally, the Chi-Ma-Kha Award for academic excellence was conferred to recognize outstanding students.
In his keynote address, Prof. Nabakumar Singh underlined the detrimental effects of the ongoing crises on Manipur’s education system and called for collective efforts to restore stability. DESAM President Mayengbam Somorjit reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to advocating for students’ rights and ensuring access to quality education in the state.
