Agartala, January 04, 2025: In a sharp response to allegations by Tripura’s Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury, Pradesh Congress MLA Birajit Sinha declared that his electoral success in the 2023 assembly elections did not hinge on the Congress-CPI(M) alliance. “I have won from the Kailashahar constituency six times, defeating CPI(M) candidates five times. My victory is my own, alliance or no alliance,” Sinha asserted during a press conference at the Kailashahar Congress Bhavan on Monday.

The controversy began on December 17, when Jitendra Chaudhury, addressing a public meeting organized by the Kailashahar Sub-division Committee, claimed that Sinha’s win was possible only because of CPI(M) supporters’ votes. “Without the alliance, Birajit would not have won or become an MLA,” Chaudhury remarked, triggering a fiery rebuttal from Sinha.

Flanked by Unakoti District Congress President Md. Badruzzaman, Pradesh Congress General Secretary Rudrendu Bhattacharya, and other Congress leaders, Sinha dismantled Chaudhury’s assertions. “In 2019, during the Lok Sabha elections, Congress led by 2,000 votes in Kailashahar without any alliance, my 2023 victory was inevitable, even without CPI(M)’s support,” he emphasized.

Sinha also criticized Chaudhury’s leadership, saying, “Chaudhury’s arrogance is evident. He left Manik Sarkar’s meeting midway because most supporters had already departed. His win from Sabroom, a general seat, by merely 200-250 votes in 2023 is a testament to his weakening influence.”

Sinha accused the CPI(M) of losing its foothold in Tripura. “CPI(M) is fading nationally, surviving only in Kerala. In the 2023 elections, they fielded 47 candidates and secured just 24% of the vote. Congress, on the other hand, fought in 13 seats and garnered 39%.” He further ridiculed CPI(M) for failing to field candidates in 99% of Panchayat seats in Kailashahar.

Sinha also highlighted the CPI(M)’s alleged mistreatment of former Chief Minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumdar. “Even basic facilities like police security were denied to him. This reflects their lack of respect for democratic values,” he said.

Taking a jab at Chaudhury’s criticism of Congress, Sinha remarked, “Jiten’s baseless accusations only reveal his desperation. The CPI(M) has lost its public base, and its rhetoric holds no weight anymore.”
