Agartala, January 04, 2025: A recent survey by the Union Ministry of Education (MoE) has revealed a significant 75.8% increase in student enrolments across 40 PM SHRI schools under the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India scheme. The survey compared enrolment figures from 2020-21, when these schools operated as state government institutions, to their current status under the central scheme.

The study, conducted across 28 districts in five states, showed that enrolments rose from 14,258 in 2020-21 to 25,065 in 2023-24. “Among the surveyed schools, Rajasthan had the highest representation with 26 institutions, followed by Tripura with nine, Madhya Pradesh with three, and one each from Manipur and Meghalaya,” an education ministry official stated.

The survey highlighted remarkable growth in specific schools. Phungyar Higher Secondary School in Manipur topped the list with a 295.3% surge, growing from 173 students in 2020-21 to 684 in 2023-24. Kanchanpur Government English Medium Higher Secondary School in Tripura followed with a 214.9% increase, rising from 248 to 781 students. In Rajasthan, Mahatma Gandhi Government (English Medium) School in Jaipur reported a 136.7% jump, from 215 to 509 students.

On the lower end, Tripura’s Khowai Moharchhara Higher Secondary School recorded a 49.2% increase, with enrolments climbing from 465 to 694 students.

The PM SHRI initiative, launched in September 2022, aims to transform 14,500 government schools into model institutions through a 60:40 funding model between the Centre and states. The MoE reported that 12,079 PM SHRI schools are operational nationwide, with 829 in Madhya Pradesh, 734 in Rajasthan, 116 in Manipur, and 68 each in Meghalaya and Tripura. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal are yet to adopt the scheme.

The enrolment surge highlights the success of PM SHRI schools in attracting more students, reflecting improved infrastructure and quality of education under the scheme.
