Guwahati, Jan 6: The Assam Congress is set to undertake a significant leadership reshuffle and launch a statewide yatra as part of its strategy to regain power in the 2026 Assembly elections. The reshuffle, which will impact leadership at all levels, is expected to take place after the upcoming panchayat elections in January and February.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah outlined the party’s plans, stating that the reshuffle is designed to strengthen the party’s organizational structure and ensure readiness for the elections. He expressed confidence that Congress will return to power after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s term ends in May 2026.

“Once Sarma’s term concludes in May 2026, Congress will form the next government. We are fully prepared with a clear roadmap, and the reshuffle will follow the panchayat elections,” Borah said.

As part of its election strategy, Congress will embark on a two-phase statewide yatra. The first phase will cover 45 Assembly constituencies from Jonai to Sonai, while the second phase will span 47 constituencies from Sadiya to Mandia. Additionally, the party will participate in the Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, and Jai Samvidhan Yatra, as announced by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), with active participation from leaders and workers across the state.

Borah also revealed that the Congress party plans to finalize its candidates for the 2026 elections eight months in advance, in consultation with potential alliance partners. However, he made it clear that Congress would not form an alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and would continue its firm opposition to the BJP and RSS.

In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the ruling BJP secured 60 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while Congress won 29 seats and AIUDF claimed 16 seats.
