Agartala, January 6, 2025: Tripura Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foresight in steering India towards renewable energy emphasizing the transformative impact of the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY).

Addressing a camp organized by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), Nath detailed the scheme’s benefits and its potential to revolutionize energy generation and consumption in the state.

“PM Narendra Modi recognized early on the depletion of traditional energy resources like coal and gas. He envisioned a future where people would depend on solar energy for electricity. That is why he launched the PM-SGMBY scheme to make electricity almost free and enable citizens to generate their own power,” said Nath.

Highlighting the scheme’s subsidies, Nath elaborated, “If an individual installs a one-kilowatt solar plant, the central government provides a subsidy of ₹33,000. For two kilowatts, it’s ₹66,000, and for three kilowatts, ₹85,000. The cost of installation ranges from ₹60,000 to ₹65,000 for one kilowatt. If someone cannot afford the upfront expense, banks offer loans at just 7% interest without requiring security. Vendors approved under the scheme will install these solar plants at homes or business establishments.”

Sharing a success story, Nath said, “An employee of TSECL installed a solar plant at his home. Earlier, his electricity bill was ₹2,700 per month. Now, he pays just ₹12. By next year, he will start earning revenue by selling surplus electricity to the power grid. This reflects the transformative impact of this initiative.”

The scheme integrates solar plants with the power grid, enabling daytime electricity generation and grid connectivity, while nighttime needs are met by drawing power from the grid.

The minister also announced a series of awareness camps across the state. “Today’s camp at the TSECL head office is just the beginning. We will organize similar camps in Mohanpur, Jirania, and other rural and urban areas to ensure every household and business can benefit from this initiative. Our vision is to make Tripura the leading state in North East India in utilizing the PM-SGMBY scheme.”

Nath expressed confidence in the scheme’s role in achieving “Atmanirbhar Tripura.” He added, “We aim to empower individuals to generate their electricity needs and sell any surplus, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem.”

The event witnessed participation from Power Department Secretary Abhishek Singh, TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu, DGM (C&T) Sujata Sarkar, corporators from Agartala Municipal Corporation, TSECL officials, and enthusiastic citizens eager to benefit from the scheme.

The PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with its subsidies, revenue opportunities, and eco-friendly focus, is poised to bring a sustainable energy revolution, aligning with PM Modi’s vision for a greener and self-reliant India.
