Agartala, January 09, 2025: Tripura police have arrested a notorious human trafficker from Ward No. 3 of Paschim Chandrapur Gram Panchayat in Dharmanagar subdivision. The arrest has generated intense excitement and concern within the local community, as another human trafficker managed to escape the police’s grasp.
According to reports, Paschim Chandrapur Gausabha, located near the city of Dharmanagar has become a hotbed of criminal activities due to its proximity to the India-Bangladesh border. The area has seen heightened activities of human traffickers, drug traffickers, and other illicit operations. Despite occasional police raids, these criminals continued their activities unabated for a long time.
Under mounting pressure from locals, the police of Dharmanagar station successfully arrested Nasir Ali (50), a notorious human trafficker and father of Rakman Ali. However, Islam Uddin (32) managed to evade the police and remains at large.
Earlier, on January 3, police had raided Nasir Ali’s house, resulting in the arrest of a Bangladeshi woman, Nazma Begum (35), and her infant son, Rabiul Islam (6). During the raid, 3-4 other Bangladeshis escaped from the house, and the police are yet to apprehend them. Nasir Ali and his son Islam Uddin were reportedly involved in facilitating illegal border crossings for large sums of money.
Nasir Ali was presented in court today, where he was ordered to be held in jail custody till January 17.
The recent developments have heightened concerns among Dharmanagar residents, especially given the current tense situation in Bangladesh. On December 25, a curfew was imposed in the India-Bangladesh border areas of Kanchanpur and Dharmanagar subdivisions from 6 pm to 6 am to prevent any terrorist or illegal entry into India. Despite these measures, residents believe that the efforts are being undermined by a few Indian brokers working with the traffickers.
“The situation could escalate if strict legal action is not taken against these human traffickers immediately,” expressed a concerned resident of the subdivision.
