Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has lauded the Union Home Ministry’s decision to introduce regulations allowing Myanmar residents within 10 km of the border to temporarily enter Manipur with a “border pass” issued by the Assam Rifles. Singh described the move as “a good beginning” and thanked Home Minister Amit Shah for addressing border security concerns.

“Earlier, nobody paid attention to who was going in or out of the country. I thank the Union Home Minister and the Ministry of Home Affairs for introducing this regulation,” the Chief Minister said. He emphasized the need for strict vigilance, urging Assam Rifles, state police, health officials, and district staff to employ advanced technology to prevent illegal immigration. Biren Singh made these remarks while attending an event to commemorate the death anniversary of former Manipur king Gambhir Singh.

On a separate note, the Chief Minister addressed the recent suicide of a 21-year-old woman at Mekola relief camp, clarifying that the incident stemmed from personal issues unrelated to conditions in the camp. “An FIR has been filed, and further investigation is underway,” he said.

Biren Singh also expressed concern over the misuse of social media to spread misinformation and mockery about Manipur. “It is very unfortunate. We have taken action through cybercrime units, arresting several individuals and blocking accounts. We will continue to act in accordance with the law,” he added.
