Guwahati, Jan 11: NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL) and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) have signed a Joint Venture Agreement to develop a 1000 MW solar power project in Assam. The agreement, finalized at a ceremony in Guwahati on Friday, marks a significant step toward enhancing renewable energy infrastructure in the state.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Assam’s Power Minister Prasant Phukan, Principal Secretary (Energy) KK Diwedi, APDCL Chairman Syedain Abbasi, APDCL Managing Director Rakesh Kumar, and APGCL Managing Director Bibhu Bhuinya.
As part of the agreement, NIRL will hold a 51% stake, while APDCL will own 49%. NIRL, a subsidiary of NLC India Limited, will bring its expertise in renewable energy, while APDCL will support land acquisition, regulatory approvals, and infrastructure development for the project.
The solar power initiative aims to meet Assam’s growing energy needs with clean, sustainable energy. Additionally, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) will be signed with Assam’s Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) to ensure the sale of 100% of the generated power for the next 25 years.
Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman of NIRL, highlighted that the project would enhance the state’s energy security, create green jobs, and drive socio-economic development. He also emphasized that the initiative aligns with India’s renewable energy goals.
This joint venture is expected to play a crucial role in increasing Assam’s renewable energy capacity and supporting the state’s Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO).
