Agartala, January 13, 2025: A total of 2815 Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested for illegal infiltration over the past three years, with 1746 of them sent back to their country. The data was revealed by Chief Minister and Home Minister Manik Saha on the second day of the 13th Legislative Assembly during a written response to queries raised by Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and CPIM MLA Nayan Sarkar.
Sharing the statistics, the Chief Minister Dr Saha stated, “From 2022 to October 31, 2024, we have arrested 2815 Bangladeshi citizens for illegal infiltration. Of these, 1746 individuals have been successfully deported to Bangladesh.”
He further clarified the status of the remaining 1069 detainees. “Currently, 474 individuals are in jail custody, 8 are in temporary detention centers, 2 are housed in shelter homes, and 585 have been released on bail as per court orders,” Sarkar informed the assembly.
The issue of cross-border infiltration remains a pressing concern in the region, with legislators raising questions about border security and the rehabilitation of detainees. Highlighting the state’s commitment to addressing the challenge, the Chief Minister assured, “We are taking every measure to ensure that our borders remain secure and legal procedures are followed diligently.”
