Sikkim has reached a significant milestone in women empowerment, with 13 women nurses securing placements in Germany’s healthcare sector through the state’s Sikkim INSPIRES Program. Trained in the German language in Kerala, these nurses are set to travel to Germany by March 2025, with the first four departures scheduled for the end of January.

The achievement was celebrated during the Maghey Sankranti Mela on 14th January 2025 in Jorethang, where Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) personally felicitated the nurses. This event also marked the golden jubilee celebration of Sikkim’s Statehood under the Indian Union.

The German language training initiative is a collaborative effort between the Skill Development, Commerce & Industries, and Planning & Development Departments. The Sikkim INSPIRES (Integrated Service Provision and Innovation for Reviving Economies) Program, a flagship initiative of the state government, aims to enhance employability and foster global partnerships for skill-driven economic growth in non-farm sectors.

The success of these 13 women nurses serves as a powerful example of resilience, determination, and global career opportunities, inspiring many others in Sikkim. During the same event, seven alumni from the Skill Development Department, now employed in prestigious organizations or self-employed, were also recognized. These individuals represent the empowerment of underprivileged women and school dropouts, showcasing the effectiveness of skills training in integrating them into the workforce.
