Morigaon, Jan 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Jonbeel Mela in Morigaon district on Thursday, where he handed over the annual subsistence grant, or ‘Bhatta,’ to Gobha Raja Shri Dipsing Deo Raja and 22 other Tiwa kings. The historic three-day festival, known for its barter system, marks a key cultural event for the Tiwa community.

Jonbeel Mela, which traces its roots back to the 14th century, is celebrated on the first Thursday of the Assamese month of Magh, immediately after Magh Bihu. During his visit, Sarma also inaugurated the book Tiwa Rajyar Buranji (History of Tiwa Kingdom), authored by Narayan Kumar Radu Kakaty.

The Chief Minister emphasized the state government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Mela. Earlier in the day, Sarma chaired a cabinet meeting in Morigaon and announced plans to build a permanent stage at the Mela venue to further support the festival’s growth and infrastructure.
