Guwahati, Jan 17: Dilip Saikia, the Member of Parliament from Darrang-Udalguri, has been elected unopposed as the new president of the Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who oversaw the election process, handed over the official appointment letter to Saikia. The ceremony was attended by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and outgoing state president Bhabesh Kalita.
Saikia, 51, a two-term MP and national general secretary of the BJP, was the sole nominee for the position. His candidacy was supported by senior party leaders, including Kalita, Sarma, and Assam Assembly Deputy Speaker Numol Momin.
First elected to the Lok Sabha in 2019, Saikia has held various important positions within the party and its youth wing. The election was managed by central leaders such as Harish Dwivedi, Sambit Patra, and Sunil Bansal, who coordinated with state leadership to finalize Saikia as the consensus candidate.
