Agartala, January 17, 2025: Tripura has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing the World Health Organization’s recommended dentist-to-population ratio, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced on Thursday. The state has also outperformed the national average in the percentage of dentists employed in government service, a trend that highlights Tripura’s robust healthcare framework.

Speaking at the 23rd Annual Dental Conference in Agartala, Dr. Saha shared that Tripura now has one dentist for every 7,000 people, exceeding the WHO benchmark of one dentist per 7,500 people. “I am delighted to announce this achievement. Additionally, 28% of dentists in Tripura are employed in government service, compared to a mere 2% at the national level,” Dr. Saha stated. He attributed this to the state’s focus on public healthcare and its ability to attract dental professionals to government roles.

In contrast, the Chief Minister noted that in other states and metro cities, most dental professionals opt for private practice, viewing their skills as a pathway to self-reliance. “This difference underscores the unique approach we’ve adopted in Tripura, where public service is prioritized,” he added.

Dr. Saha, a renowned maxillofacial surgeon before entering politics, urged the medical fraternity to lead by example in their personal and professional conduct. “Doctors must embody the advice they give to their patients. For instance, we advocate for good oral hygiene but must ensure we practice what we preach,” he said. Sharing an anecdote, Dr. Saha recalled a professor who smoked during lectures, even while warning students about the carcinogenic risks of smoking. “Such behavior creates a contradictory impression. It’s crucial for doctors to maintain credibility in the eyes of their patients and students,” he emphasized.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen the dental healthcare system, including the formation of a state Dental Council and the development of a comprehensive database of dental surgeons and technicians across Tripura.
