Agartala, January 20, 2025: Tripura’s Unakoti District Court has delivered a landmark judgment sentencing Ramiz Ali, a 35-year-old resident of Khaworabil Gram Panchayat under Irani Police Station in Kailashahar to rigorous imprisonment for the murder of his wife Roshna Begum. The verdict was announced by Judge Sudipta Chowdhury after meticulously reviewing the testimony of 22 witnesses.
Public Prosecutor Sunirmil Deb shed light on the grim details of the case. “Ramiz Ali married Roshna Begum, daughter of Nesharun Bibi from Dhaliakandi village, in May 2019. However, the marriage soon turned into a nightmare for Roshna, as she endured relentless physical and mental torture,” he said.
On the fateful night of January 6, 2020, Ramiz attacked Roshna with a sharp spade at their residence, resulting in her instant death. The following day, he informed her mother, Nesharun Bibi, about the incident. Upon reaching the house, Nesharun found her daughter’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood. “It was a horrific sight no mother should ever have to witness,” Dev recounted.
Upon being informed, the Irani Police Station promptly reached the scene and transported Roshna’s body to the Unkoti District Hospital. On January 7, 2020, Nesharun Bibi filed a case against Ramiz Ali and one of his relatives. “Ramiz initially fled the area, but our investigative officer, Aparna Debnath, apprehended him within three days,” Deb added.
The investigation progressed steadily, with Aparna Debnath submitting the charge sheet to the court on May 31, 2020. The prosecution presented 22 witnesses whose testimonies built a strong case against Ramiz, outweighing the defense’s two witnesses.
After a protracted legal battle, Judge Sudipta Chowdhury pronounced Ramiz Ali guilty on January 18, 2025. “He has been sentenced to life imprisonment under IPC Section 302, along with a fine of fifty thousand taka. In case of default, he will serve an additional nine months in prison,” Deb stated. Additionally, Ramiz received a three-year sentence with a similar fine under separate charges.
The judgment marks a significant step toward justice for victims of domestic violence. “This verdict sends a strong message that such heinous acts will not go unpunished,” Deb concluded.
