Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh issued a stern warning on Thursday against groups engaging in extortion, character assassination, communal and threats of abduction. He also criticized social media page operators uploading videos violating individuals’ privacy.
Addressing the press, Biren Singh stated, “We are seeing signs of calmness in the state, and I seek the media’s support in restoring normalcy.” However, he expressed concern over disturbing communal posts and videos of personal interrogations being circulated online, calling such actions “awkward, disturbing, and uncivilized.”
The CM revealed that he has instructed police and intelligence agencies to take action against social media admins and account holders involved in these practices. “A formal notice will be issued soon. Who authorized these groups to interfere in private lives? Be careful if you’re engaging in such activities,” he warned.
Biren Singh also highlighted the government’s restraint during the unrest but emphasized that the situation has gone too far. “Several groups are acting like authorities, uploading videos of interrogations and summoning officials for extortion. Threats of abduction and assault must stop immediately,” he said, adding that special police teams will be formed to address these issues.
The CM disclosed that individuals involved in arson, looting, and destruction during the violence have been arrested, with some facing charges under the NSA. He warned that their records would hinder future opportunities, including government employment.
The Chief Minister also urged the public to support the government in curbing communal tensions, safeguarding private lives, and restoring order. He also noted that with normalcy returning, the government has resumed developmental initiatives, including the “Go to Hills” mission and project inaugurations.
