Aizawl, Jan 24: The 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, in conjunction with National Girl Child Day, was celebrated on Friday at the Dawrpui Multi-purpose Centre in Aizawl. The event was attended by Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena, who served as the Chief Guest, and was organized by the State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW) and the Directorate of Women & Child Development.
In his address, Chief Secretary Meena highlighted the importance of the BBBP scheme and called for collaboration between key departments, including Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs, Women & Child Development, Health & Family Welfare, and School Education, to fully achieve its goals. He also praised Mizoram’s child sex ratio, which is higher than the national average, but noted that further improvements are needed in some areas.
The theme for the day, “Empowering Girls for a Bright Future,” featured the recognition of several girls for their academic achievements, particularly in STEM fields, and in sports. Attendees participated in a pledge-taking ceremony led by Jennifer Lalrinzuali Renthlei, Miss Mizoram 2024 and WCD Ambassador, committing to ensuring a safe and equal future for all girls.
The event was chaired by Pi Lalzarmawii, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of SWTA, W&CD, and included addresses from Lalramsanga Sailo, IRS, Secretary of Sports & Youth Services. During the function, the BBBP Mizoram Theme Song, titled “Pen zel rawh,” composed by LR Ruata, was officially released.
Zoramthangi Chhangte, Director of WCD, delivered a special address reflecting on the progress of the BBBP scheme over the past decade.
The celebrations will continue across Mizoram at the district and block levels until March 8, 2025, with various awareness initiatives planned throughout the state.
