Shumang Leela: A Reflection Of Manipur’s Socio-Cultural Ethos, Says CM Biren Singh

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh emphasized the cultural significance of Shumang Leela, describing it as a “powerful medium that reflects the socio-cultural ethos of Manipur.” He was addressing the Award Presentation Programme of the 21st Shumang Leela Ningtham Kumhei 2024-2025 held at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Imphal.

The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Lok Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba, state ministers- Kashim Vashum, L. Susindro, Awangbow Newmai, along with MLAs and officials from various departments.

The All Manipur Shumang Leela Council presented awards to distinguished theatre and Shumang Leela personalities. Renowned theatre director Dr. Ratan Thiyam was honored with the prestigious Pidonu Award.

A highlight of the evening was the premiere of the Shumang Leela play “May 03rd”, performed by a select group of Shumang Leela artists. The play, inspired by the ongoing crisis in the state, was written by Ranjit Ningthouja and directed by Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Sougrakpam Hemanta. It featured celebrated artists such as Iboyaima Khuman, Sougrakpam Hemanta, Lukhoi, Oinam Arun, Yumnam Arun, RK Sanaton, Deepson Senjam, Athokpam Santosh, Heramoti, Y.Nilachandra, Oken Thoudam, Surchand, Dayananda and Bishesh Huirem in pivotal roles. The performance attracted thousands of attendees.

Reflecting on the past, the Chief Minister noted the impactful role of Shumang Leela in raising awareness on critical social issues such as COVID-19 vaccination, the importance of education, family planning, and combating drug abuse.

Congratulating the awardees and participants, CM N. Biren Singh said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the awardees and participants who have showcased their exceptional talent and dedication in preserving and promoting this cherished art form.”

The event highlighted the enduring legacy and relevance of Shumang Leela in shaping and reflecting Manipur’s cultural identity.
