Agartala, January 25, 2025: Tripura’s Unakoti District Congress members staged a road blockade from 10 a.m. on the Kailashahar-Dharamnagar main road near the airport, demanding urgent repairs to the Manu River embankment in Kailashahar. The blockade caused massive disruption, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the road for over two hours.

The protest was fueled by growing concerns that the lack of repairs to the embankment, combined with illegal construction activities by Bangladesh on the border, could lead to severe flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. “We cannot let another disaster happen,” said Kailashahar MLA Birajit Sinha, who led the protest. “The negligence of the administration has left thousands of people vulnerable. Despite repeated pleas, no action has been taken to repair the dam, and the damage caused by past floods remains unaddressed.”

The road blockade was lifted after two hours following the intervention of district officials. However, the protesters, including opposition MLAs, issued a stern warning, threatening to escalate their movement if the administration fails to take immediate action. “This is not the end,” Sinha declared. “If the government does not act swiftly, we will organize a larger movement to ensure our demands are met.”

The issue has previously been discussed in the state Assembly and brought to the attention of the Union Home Department through the state Chief Minister. However, the lack of tangible progress has left residents frustrated. Sinha highlighted the urgency of the matter, pointing out the increasing danger posed by the raised embankments on the Bangladeshi side of the Manu River, which now stand at a height of 12 to 14 feet. “If the water levels rise again like last year, Kailashahar will face catastrophic flooding,” he warned.

To draw attention to the dire situation, Sinha and his team visited several affected areas, including Jalai, Chanthair Jarultali, Kapranga, Durgapur, and Govindapur, before organizing the protest. “The people of Kailashahar have suffered through 18 floods in recent years, yet the administration has failed to address the core issue. If this neglect continues, the consequences will be disastrous,” he said.
