In response to a surge in extortion-related activities, the Manipur government has set up an integrated anti-extortion cell under the Home Department. The cell comprises representatives from the state police, Central Armed Police Forces, and Assam Rifles/Army, aiming to provide a robust and efficient mechanism to address such issues and ensure public safety.
A government statement, issued by Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, highlighted that individuals, including government officials, have been receiving threats through calls, messages, or letters from unlawful organizations, demanding money and issuing severe consequences if demands are unmet.
The anti-extortion cell has launched a toll-free number, 1800 202 3326, for the public to report any threats or extortion attempts. Upon receiving complaints, the cell will coordinate with local police stations to take prompt action. The government has also advised the public to avoid unsafe locations.
“The Manipur government seeks the full cooperation of citizens in combating these unlawful activities and remains committed to ensuring their safety and security,” the statement added.
