Gangtok, Jan 28: Tourism in Sikkim is experiencing a strong revival, with a notable increase in visitors to North Sikkim’s Mangan district following the severe disruptions caused by the October 2023 floods. The floods, triggered by a glacial lake outburst, led to significant damage and temporarily halted tourism activities across the region.
After months of recovery and rebuilding efforts, North Sikkim was reopened to tourists on December 1, 2023, with strict safety protocols in place. Since then, the region has seen a marked surge in tourist arrivals, with travelers drawn to its stunning Himalayan vistas, peaceful monasteries, and vibrant local culture.
Local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and tour operators, are benefiting from the boost in tourism, helping to revive the local economy. This positive trend is also extending to other parts of Sikkim as tourists return to explore the state’s natural and cultural attractions.
The Sikkim government has implemented measures to ensure the safety of tourists and continue the rebuilding process of the tourism infrastructure. The rapid recovery of the tourism sector highlights both the resilience of Sikkim’s tourism industry and the local communities’ determination to restore the region’s appeal as a top travel destination.
