Agartala, January 29, 2025: Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader, Politburo member and party state coordinator Prakash Karat on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of undermining democracy. “The BJP wants to change democracy to suit its own interests. This is an attack on the very foundation of our nation,” Karat declared, addressing a massive gathering at Orient Chowmuhani.

The rally was held in the heart of Agartala city in presence of CPIM leaders including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and senior leader Aghore Debbarma. Thousands of party supporters from various districts thronged the venue, defying restrictions that prevented the event from taking place at Swami Vivekananda Maidan here in Agartala city, where the CPIM had traditionally held its state conference rallies.

Karat, addressing the restrictions imposed on the rally venue asserted, “I have attended 10 conferences in Tripura, all held at Swami Vivekananda Maidan. This time, the ruling party tried to suppress us, but look at this massive turnout. The BJP will get its answer through the people’s movement.”

Accusing the Modi government of systematically dismantling the democratic structure of the country, Karat stated, “Since coming to power, the BJP has been working to weaken the parliamentary system. Jailing opposition leaders, falsely framing political opponents, and launching attacks on dissenters have become their regular tactics.” He further alleged that the ruling party was attempting to amend the Constitution to serve its own agenda.

“As long as the BJP remains in power, democracy will remain in danger. That is why the Communist Party will continue its fight to safeguard democracy,” he affirmed.

Karat lambasted the BJP for favoring big businesses at the cost of the common people. “The government is running on the black money of capitalists. They have created an autocratic regime that is crushing the poor and working-class citizens,” he charged. “The only way to put an end to this injustice is through a mass struggle.”
