The Manipuri film and theatre fraternity mourns the loss of veteran actor and filmmaker Diya Khwairakpam, who passed away recently. A prominent figure in Manipuri cinema, Diya made significant contributions to both theatre and digital filmmaking.
Born as the youngest son among nine siblings to Khwairakpam Momon and Khwairakpam Ongbi Bormani of Yumnam Leikai, Imphal West, Diya grew up in a household deeply rooted in theatre. His father, a senior drama artiste and director of Rupmahal Theatre, and his great-grandfather Nabakishore, who introduced drama to Manipur, played a crucial role in shaping his passion for the performing arts.
Diya began his acting journey as a child artist when he joined Panthoibi Natya Mandir at Yumnam Leikai while studying in Class III. He later debuted in Manipuri celluloid cinema with the film “Lamphelpatki Kombirei”. Over the years, he directed more than 30 Manipuri digital films, making his directorial debut with “Phairenthagi Angaoba Leichil”. He was also actively involved in numerous telefilms.
Diya Khwairakpam’s passing is a great loss to the Manipuri film and theatre industry. His legacy in acting and filmmaking will continue to inspire future generations.
