Aizawl, Jan. 29: Representatives from the Thangram Indigenous Peoples’ Movement (TIPM) in Assam met with Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Tuesday, advocating for the inclusion of approximately 180 square miles of Thangram-inhabited areas currently under Assam’s jurisdiction to be brought under Mizoram. The delegation, joined by leaders of the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), presented the challenges faced by the Thangram people, stressing the importance of integrating these areas into Mizoram for the safety and well-being of the Zo community.

The regions in question, situated in the Singla and Langkaih valleys in Assam, are historically home to the Zo people. However, these areas have been designated as forest reserves by Assam, severely limiting the residents’ ability to establish settlements and engage in agriculture. Poor road conditions further compound the daily hardships faced by the community.

In response, Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed understanding of the situation and assured the delegation that his government would consider all available options to address the issues raised. He committed to taking necessary actions to support the Thangram people’s request.

The TIPM has been advocating for the transfer of these areas since 2020, engaging with both state and national leaders, including submitting a memorandum to the Prime Minister. The MZP pledged its continued support for the cause, emphasizing its efforts to ensure the welfare of the Thangram people and strengthen unity among the Zo community.
