Manipur’s dominance in Wushu was on full display at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, with the state’s athletes securing multiple medals to add to their growing tally.

T Saya Chanu clinched gold in the women’s Changquan event, while Marshal Salam and K Panthoi Devi bagged silver medals in the men’s and women’s Changquan categories, respectively. Later, Y Bonish and Kongjengbam Luxmi claimed gold in the Nanquan competition, with Hanjabam Langlentombi securing silver in the same event.

With these victories, Manipur’s Wushu contingent has contributed six medals to the state’s tally at the Games. Chef de Mission Rajchandra Moirangthem lauded the athletes’ performances, especially given the challenges they faced in preparation due to prevailing crises.

A total of 39 Wushu players, including 20 female athletes, are representing Manipur in this edition of the National Games, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Wushu made its National Games debut in 2007 in Guwahati, and Manipur has since been a dominant force in the discipline.

The state’s Wushu athletes have consistently excelled in previous editions, winning 9 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze medals at the 37th National Games in Goa (2023), and 6 gold, 5 silver, and 2 bronze medals in the 36th edition in Gujarat (2022). Notably, four Wushu players from Manipur have also been honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award.

With strong performances in Dehradun, Manipur’s Wushu athletes continue to uphold the state’s legacy in the sport, reaffirming their status as top contenders at the National Games.
