Aizawl, Jan 31: Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMCH) in Mizoram is set to begin offering tissue transplantation services, as announced by Health Minister Lalrinpuii. During a meeting in Lunglei, the minister revealed that the hospital has made all necessary preparations in collaboration with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

ZMCH has appointed a transplant coordinator, consultant, and other staff, and an operation theatre has been set up in anticipation of the service. The hospital is now awaiting the final license to begin performing kidney and heart transplants.

Once operational, the transplant services will offer a significant cost advantage, with heart transplants at ZMCH priced at Rs. 1 lakh, compared to Rs. 9 lakh at private hospitals in Aizawl.

In addition, the state government recently restructured the Zoram Medical College Society, making it a fully government-owned institution, now renamed Zoram Medical College and Hospital. The government is also focused on addressing the shortage of healthcare workers, with plans to recruit 100 additional staff members.
