Agartala, February 1, 2025: A major fire was narrowly averted at the Metro Bazar shopping mall in the Shakuntala Road area of Agartala city on Saturday morning, sending shockwaves among shopkeepers and customers. Firefighters acted swiftly to contain the fire, which reportedly originated from an air conditioning unit inside the mall.

According to eyewitnesses, thick smoke was first noticed billowing from an AC unit inside the shopping mall around 10 AM. Panic gripped employees and customers as the fire alarm rang out. “We saw smoke coming out of the AC, and within minutes, the entire floor was filled with a burning smell. We immediately rushed out and informed the fire department,” said a shop employee.

Within moments, the fire brigade was alerted, and two fire engines arrived at the scene. Firefighters worked diligently to douse the flames and managed to bring the situation under control before it could escalate. “Our primary assessment suggests that the fire originated from the air conditioning system. Fortunately, it was detected early, preventing any large-scale damage,” stated a fire department official.

The incident sparked concern among nearby shop owners, as the shopping mall is located in a densely packed commercial area. “Had the fire spread further, the consequences would have been catastrophic,” said a local trader.

Although no casualties or significant damages were reported, authorities have urged commercial establishments to conduct regular electrical safety checks to prevent such incidents in the future. The fire department has also advised shop owners to ensure their premises are equipped with functional fire safety equipment.

The quick response of the fire brigade and alertness of the mall staff played a crucial role in averting what could have been a disastrous fire in the busy shopping hub.
