Agartala, February 06, 2025: Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh on Thursday lauded the rapid development of the National Law University (NLU) Tripura and expressed confidence that the institution is on course to establish itself as a premier legal education center in the country.

Speaking at the ‘Ground-Breaking Ceremony for construction of NLU Tripura Buildings’ at Narsingarh here in Agartala city, Justice Singh stated, “Today, as I stand here in front of you, I feel a sense of pride that NLU Tripura has kicked off in such a grand fashion and is on the course of making a mark on its own.” He emphasized that the growth of any institution requires two fundamental elements: infrastructure, which he termed as the ‘hardware,’ and the academic environment, which includes teaching faculty, students, and other human resources, as the ‘software.’

Justice Singh noted that NLU Tripura has successfully achieved both. “Today, we can proudly say that Tripura has a full-fledged teaching faculty, and the first and second batches of NLU Tripura are performing exceptionally well. The semesters are proceeding on time, and there has been full enrollment even in the second batch, despite the university being in its early years.” He credited the success to all stakeholders involved in shaping the university.

Expressing gratitude, he said, “We are thankful to the Chief Minister and the team of senior officials of the Government of Tripura, led by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, along with officials like Gitte, Raval, and the engineers of the concerned department. They have conceived and are actively executing the plan to bring NLU Tripura onto the national landscape.” Justice Singh expressed confidence that in the near future, NLU Tripura will stand at par with esteemed institutions like NLSIU Bangalore and NLU Delhi.

He further extended his appreciation to his colleagues, stating, “I am grateful to my fellow judges, Justice Goud, Justice Lodh, Justice Purakyastha and Justice Palit for their unwavering support. The members of the governing body and the learned Advocate General have played a crucial role in ensuring that everything runs smoothly and that this institution takes off well.”

Recognizing the trust placed by parents, he remarked, “It is not easy for parents from far-off states like Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, as well as from Tripura, to send their children to a newly established university in the easternmost part of the country. However, due to the confidence created by the faculty, governing body, and state support, NLU Tripura has begun making its mark.”

Addressing the students, Justice Singh highlighted their role in shaping the institution. “The students of the first two batches are witnessing history. By the time they graduate in five years, the university’s infrastructure will be fully developed, and its academic excellence will be widely recognized.” He concluded with an inspiring note, “On this occasion, I congratulate everyone involved in this institution-building task. I am confident that the students of NLU Tripura will contribute immensely to society and nation-building.”

Speaking at the event, Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha emphasized the state’s commitment to legal education during the groundbreaking ceremony of the permanent campus of National Law University (NLU) Tripura.

“I am honored to witness this historic occasion. The foundation stone was laid by Her Excellency, President Droupadi Murmu, on October 12, 2022. Today marks a milestone in legal education in Tripura,” he said.

Dr. Saha assured full government support, stating, “Tripura is committed to providing land, financial, and logistical assistance to NLU. Infrastructure development is a priority to ensure students and faculty have access to world-class academic and research facilities.”

He urged the university to expand its focus beyond legal education. “NLU should emphasize research, integrate law with technology and governance, and collaborate internationally to engage with the best legal minds,” he added.

Highlighting NLU’s role in democracy, he remarked, “A strong legal system is essential for justice and governance. This university must produce skilled legal professionals, researchers, and policymakers.”

Dr. Saha concluded, “Today’s event is not just about a building but about shaping the future of justice. We are committed to making NLU Tripura a center of legal excellence.”
