Imphal, February 6: Amid months of unrest, Manipur is embracing the power of cinema with the launch of the 2nd Eikhoigi Imphal International Film Festival (EIIFF) 2025. The festival, which opened Thursday at the City Convention Centre, brought together filmmakers and cinephiles from across India and beyond, reaffirming that Manipur is more than its past conflicts.

Veteran filmmaker Aribam Syam Sharma reflected on Imphal’s war-torn history, expressing hope that the festival would help usher in peace. The restored version of his classic Ishanou was the festival’s opening film.

Information and Public Relations Minister Dr. Sapam Ranjan emphasized the role of cinema in shaping society and the importance of film preservation. Chief Secretary PK Singh assured greater support for future editions, with plans to seek funding from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Festival Director Sunzu Bachaspatimayum highlighted the solidarity shown by filmmakers nationwide, reinforcing cinema’s power to unite and heal. The three-day festival features film screenings, panel discussions, masterclasses, and, for the first time in Northeast India, two Pitch Sessions offering Rs. 8 lakh in funding for emerging filmmakers.

As Manipur transitions from turmoil to a creative hub, EIIFF 2025 stands as a beacon of hope and artistic resilience.
