The NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), a collective of prominent civil society organizations and student bodies in Mizoram, has appealed to Chief Minister Lalduhoma to rethink the plan to transfer Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

In a meeting held on Friday, NGOCC leaders raised concerns about the decision, urging the Chief Minister to review the proposal. They expressed worries that handing over the airport could affect the state’s control over its operations.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma assured the NGOCC that the state government remains committed to maintaining ownership of Lengpui Airport, which is the only state-managed airport in India. While he acknowledged the need for improvements, he mentioned that financial limitations have hampered necessary upgrades.

However, Lalduhoma assured that the state government would seek funding from the finance commission to improve the airport infrastructure, including runway enhancements.

The Mizo National Front (MNF) also opposes the plan. TBC Lalvenchhunga, the Chief Minister’s Finance Adviser, confirmed that the state cabinet has not yet made a final decision and that the draft Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the handover is still under review.
