Agartala, February 10, 2025: The Tripura government is set to restore nearly 250 waterfalls across the state, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Sunday. Speaking at a meeting organized by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, he emphasized the government’s commitment to water conservation and sustainable resource management.

“We are actively gathering data from the Rural Development Department, Forest Department, Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA), and other stakeholders to assess how many of these waterfalls are functional and how many need revival,” Nath stated. He pointed out that while Tripura once had over 250 waterfalls, only a few remain active today.

Highlighting the state’s water resources, Nath reassured that Tripura is in a favorable position regarding groundwater levels compared to states like Assam and West Bengal, which extract more groundwater. “We are exploring ways to maintain groundwater reserves, maximize surface water utilization, and promote rainwater harvesting to secure water availability for future generations,” he added.

The minister further noted that most rivers in the region flow northward, and the government is devising strategies to retain water within the state to prevent future water shortages.

Tripura has already taken strides in water management. In 2023, the state inaugurated its first-ever Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) groundwater treatment plant at Ushabazar, Agartala. Built at a cost of ₹78 crore, the plant has an eight-million-liter-per-day capacity and features a smart water quality meter and remote control facilities to ensure water purity.

With the government’s renewed focus on reviving natural water bodies, these efforts are expected to enhance Tripura’s ecological sustainability and long-term water security.
